PROTAGONIST SYNDROME

no noise without explosion
this heat in the brain, a solar flare?
staring at a dead man's portrait,
face in shadows
lining the floor like fallen pillars
Or bars of a cage.

a scream, unthinkable,
like sounding the alarm.
malevolence or misery, unknown.
every roof, some bland tombstone
as forgettable as the faces
one sees in passing.
ego inflamed, they remain so.
